What are dental implants?
Dental implants take the form of either metal posts or frame-like structures which are surgically attached to the jawbone. The treatment then involves the replacement tooth or teeth being securely attached.
How do dental implants work?
Implants are a permanent solution replacing lost teeth; as they’re fused to the jawbone, they provide a far more stable solution as compared to the alternative of dentures. Dental implants can be suited where normal bridges or dentures may not, where there are sore spots or poor ridges, for example.
To be a suitable patient for dental implants, you need to have gums that are healthy, with a jaw bone that’s in equally as good condition, so that the implants can be fully supported. In order for the dental implants to be successful for the long-term, patients need to keep up with thorough oral hygiene.
Because of the excellent results they provide, and the complexity of the procedure, dental implants are a relatively costly procedure. However with that said, it must also be considered that the results they provide are far preferred to dentures, and can last a lifetime.
